Mandatory Registration for SIL Providers: How United for Care Upholds the Highest Standards in Supported Independent Living

Choosing a Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider is a deeply personal decision. It’s not just about supports. It’s about home, safety, trust, and knowing that the people providing care are doing things properly, with care and accountability.

That’s why a recent policy change confirmed by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission is an important step forward for the NDIS, and one that United For Care already upholds.

What’s Changing in 2026 for SIL Providers

The Australian Government has confirmed that from 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living providers will be required to be mandatorily registered with the NDIS Commission.

At the moment, not every SIL provider is required to be registered. This has meant that some providers operate without the same level of formal oversight, auditing, and independent quality checks.

From July 2026, all SIL providers will need to:

  • Be formally registered with the NDIS Commission
  • Meet national quality and practice standards
  • Undergo independent audits
  • Maintain strong worker screening and safeguarding systems

This change is about lifting consistency, safety, and accountability across SIL, particularly in shared living environments where people rely on others every day.

Why This Matters for People and Families

For people living in Supported Independent Living, their home should feel safe, stable, and respectful. For families and carers, there needs to be confidence that the provider is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Mandatory registration helps ensure:

  • Clear safeguards are in place to protect people
  • Staff are properly screened, trained, and supported
  • Providers are accountable for the quality of care they deliver
  • Concerns and incidents are managed transparently and responsibly

Ultimately, this reform is about making sure people are supported with dignity and care — not just meeting minimum requirements.

Where United for Care Stands

At United for Care, we have been upholding these standards since the beginning.

We are already:

  • Fully registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission
  • Regularly audited against the NDIS Practice Standards
  • Operating with established safeguarding, governance, and quality systems
  • Committed to continuous improvement, not just compliance

Being registered and audited means our services, homes, and processes are independently assessed. It means our staff meet screening requirements. And it means we are accountable — to regulators, to families, and most importantly, to the people who live in our homes.

What This Means for People Choosing SIL Today

If you are exploring Supported Independent Living now, this upcoming change is worth keeping in mind.

Working with a provider that is already registered and audited means:

  • Fewer unknowns
  • Stronger safeguards from day one
  • Confidence that systems are already in place
  • A provider who takes responsibility seriously

At United for Care, we believe people deserve clarity, honesty, and reassurance when making decisions about where they live and who supports them.

Looking Ahead with Care and Confidence

The move toward mandatory registration reflects a broader shift within the NDIS, and one that recognises the importance of safety, consistency, and quality in people’s homes.

United for Care supports this direction wholeheartedly. We will continue to provide Supported Independent Living that is thoughtful, well-governed, and grounded in respect for each person’s needs, preferences, and independence.

If you would like to speak with our team about Supported Independent Living, our registration, or available homes, we’re here to listen and help.

Because feeling safe and supported at home should never be optional.
